The objects in this exhibition emerged from sustained relationships with machines: a jack loom, 16-shaft dobby loom, and Ableton music production software. Working through mechanical problems and software glitches was part of the making process, and produced a pulse of discord and harmony in the pieces. A looping bar of percussion and a woven repeat unit together establish a sense of stability that is disrupted once the viewer encounters a break in the pattern or a beat that drifts off-grid. These traces of unruly decision-making insert unpredictability and romance into a room of objects cloaked in domestic intimacy, and thus call to mind the motions and emotions of a home.

‘Night’ is a weaving hung in the format of a Chinese hanging scroll painting. Working on the loom was leading me to think continually about verticality and length, which in turn sparked an urge to create hanging scrolls. Additionally, the repeating pattern (one I composed using Fiberworks software) of the weaving establishes order and a harmonious energy that bears relation to the subIime landscapes of nature. I had studied Chinese landscape paintings in a graduate art history course at Pratt and wanted my weavings to pay homage to the poetic spirit and rhythmic drive of iconic works by Fan Kuan, Guo Xi, and other masters. I watched YouTube videos to research finishing techniques and translated them for use on nontraditional materials.
